First-class accommodations
Valle Nevado is a modern, extensive ski resort in Chile's El Plomo foothills area of the Andes Mountains. Its location 29-miles from Chile's capital of Santiago makes it easy to reach for international visitors. The resort is inspired by French ski resorts and in 2013 it launched Chile's first mountain cable car. Skiers will have thousands of acres to choose from, the largest in South America, and all serviced by several lifts. The excellent facilities combined with some of the best snow found in Chile make Valle Nevado an ideal winter escape. It has runs to suit every skill set with some of the most challenging in Chile and plenty of good runs for children or beginners.
When to Go
Winter in Chile is June through October with July being the peak of the ski season. The majority of days will allow you to ski under blue skies and plenty of sunshine. The slopes rarely develop ice and if they do this condition usually doesn't appear until late August. If you are suffering through the heat and humidity of a North American summer Valle Nevado provides great relief. July 11 to 24 is peak season and thus the most expensive time to visit. June 27 to July 19 and July 25 to August 28 is considered the regular season, and August 29 through September is when you'll find the cheapest rates. During peak season, you will only be able to book accommodation on a weekly basis.
Where to Stay
The resort is a planned ski destination, so you won't find the little town that you find in many European ski destinations. There are three Valle Nevado hotels to choose from and self-catering condos if you prefer a little more space. Hotel prices here can be expensive, but they will also include your ski pass and some meals. The most exclusive hotel in the resort is the Hotel Valle Nevado, which is ski-in ski-out. All of its 53 guest rooms have direct slop access and amazing mountain views. Facilities include a heated outdoor pool, fitness room, children's day care, a day spa, café, and the resort's most upscale restaurant La Fourchette. Hotel Valle Nevado's prices include breakfast and dinner in any of the resort's restaurants.
Hotel Puerta Del Sol is also a nice hotel with modern and comfortable facilities. It isn't ski-in ski-out but it's very easy to reach the slopes which are 150-feet away. It is possible to get connecting rooms here, which makes it a good choice for families. Guests will have access to the heated outdoor pool, children's day care, the spa and gym. Rates here include breakfast and dinner at the hotel's on-site restaurant Mirador del Ploma.
Hotel Tres Puntas is the resort's budget option. It has double, triple, and quadruple guest rooms. Rooms are a bit on the small side, with the higher capacity rooms using bunk beds. Many of the rooms here connect, so they suit families or larger groups. Rates here also include breakfast and dinner at the Sur restaurant. It also includes access to the pool, fitness room, a ski pass, and Wi-Fi.
Facilities
There are several restaurants in the resort that you can try. La Fourchette is the most exclusive and serves Mediterranean cuisine. Sur Restaurant has a variety of cuisines from around the world in an a la carte setting. Mirador del Plomo offers international cuisine from a buffet. The Slalom and Bajo Cero restaurants are good choices for families and at lunchtime.
The resort has four bars that serve hot and cold drinks for both adults and children. The Loung Bar is particularly cozy with an open fire and snacks.
Valle Nevado Store sells an assortment of skiing gear, clothes, and souvenirs.
How to Get There
Santiago has an international airport which has direct flights on major airlines to Miami, Atlanta, Dallas, Toronto, Paris, Mexico City, Madrid, Lima, Amsterdam, New York, Auckland, Orlando, and many more destinations around the world.
The road leading to Valle Nevado is hilly and twisting, with many hairpin turns. Even though it isn't far from Santiago it can take over an hour to reach the resort, especially if road conditions aren't good. It is possible to book a private car transfer for 1 to 7 people from Santiago International Airport to Valle Nevado.
